I can't help but have a soft spot for this icon. This was the first time this cathedral appeared in my imagination. It will reappear in later icons like #096. #069 repeats the same concept but in the form of a tower and with a more Tolkienian approach.
The cathedral depicted in icon #002 is an evil cathedral.
Just as the cities of old Europe had in their Cathedrals the heart of their mystery and beauty, the modern, grey city we can see here has the heart of its dark spirit in this sort of gloomy cathedral. It rises monstrously, behind the skyline of the city. It leans sickly to the right, rickety. But firm in its evil. It watches everything that happens in the streets of the city and (this is very important) is invisible to all citizens except a few of them. In its own way, the evil cathedral presides over everything from absence.
Its reflection in the lake is also tilted at an unnatural angle. |
